[NSFW] DAZ Studio is dead

I have just seen evidence at just truly how much of a joke DAZ Studio is.

The link below is to a tweet on Twitter that contains some very graphic and very not-safe-for-work gay pornography. I’m telling you this now to save you from clicking the link if you don’t want to be … a’hem … exposed.

Ignoring the fact that the artist themself said they screwed up and the effect they produced was clearly not what they had intended.

Ignore the subjects.

Ignore the content too for that matter.

The fact that Blender was able to produce the effect depicted in the screen recording is blowing my mind (no puns intended).

As much as we struggle with fucking DFORCE and Blender has real-time fluid dynamics and fluid simulations? Natural collisions between objects?

Holy fucking shit.

That’s it.

I’m done with Studio. I have seriously got to spend most of my time with Blender going forward.

So now that you’ve read why I’m so excited, here’s the link to some extremely graphic and not-safe-for-work content that will show you why.

you wanna render Firemen at work?

Yeah I knew someone would only see the trees and not the forest.

I want to render objects where there’s gravity and particle physics and collision avoidance.

you mean like Carrara? one of mine from 2010

sorry, a fair few of my videos are age restricted

Touché.

The only problem with Carrara is that it’s no longer being developed and crashes left and right on my system. Plus, it doesn’t have support for modern rendering engines.

Wow. I’m sure studio will get there some day. I mean the store just got the dingus grabbing tools i soon I’m sure there will be a water fountain tool and there you are. :grinning:

daz is the gateway drug - basic stuff - but then you learn the other tools and what they can do better. Daz is the free, better version of poser - the 3d tool for people who didn’t want to learn maya or max.

blender is the open source tool with all the bells and whistles but no one can possibly learn how to use them all. And the last time I used it, the UI learning curve was steeper than I was willing to put into it. But everything is better than Daz - except poser. Once every 5 years poser is ahead of daz in technology for 5-6 months then daz copies everything poser did and does it a little better.

Daz is really the 3d art tool for people who don’t bother to learn how to create 3d art. People like me.

How is the learning curve on Blender? The last time I tried it, it was steep and the UI seemed clunky. Probably because I had no idea what I was doing.

It’s gotten a LOT better. The UI in Blender 2.9x is 100% better than the UI in Blender 2.7x and 2.8x and 3.0 which should be released here pretty soon promises even further UI/UX refinements.

I’m right now toying around with diffiemorphic’s DAZ to Blender import scripts. It has the ability of handling 3rd party geografts which DAZ’s Blender bridge refuses to acknowledge.

There’s an Octane renderer for Carrara, so technically it does support (for some value of support) modern renderers. The “no longer being developed” criticism holds, though. It pains me to say it, but I think it would be unwise to bet on Carrara long-term.

That said, I wish Blender had something more like Carrara’s UI. The Carrara UI isn’t perfect by any means (particularly where third-party tools with their own UIs have been grafted on unchanged), but it’s pretty intuitive and makes routine operations straightforward. Every time I try to use Blender’s UI, my heart just sinks.

I guess that any UI is a matter of familiarity and muscle memory. But there is a certain class of 3D application UIs (from which Blender’s descends) that have clearly been designed by engineers rather than UI/UX specialists, and which seem to set out to make everything as cryptic and unwieldy as possible. Sometimes it feels like the UI is actively fighting you to try to stop you getting anything done.

Not to mention crashing on my machine every 5 minutes. If the app refuses to stay running I can’t do much with it.

Until DS4 I had that exact issue with DAZ studio, hence using Carrara and Poser, Carrara still crashes less for me than DAZ studio on either PC so no idea.

Carrara is very fussy about its extensions folder though IE plugins and the exact versions installed, some third party ones can clash too.

It simply closes after the Splash-screen if it doesn’t like one, I run two versions for that reason, one with the Octane render plugin and one with several plugins that won’t play nice with it and other plugins that do, Architools being the main one.

Also most of the Digital Carvers Guild plugins but that’s fine as most won’t work in Octane anyway.

Blender is cool but I never could get the DAZ to Blender bridge to work.
